Moroccan 7'5" x 10'8" Antique Rug 1950
7'5" x 10'8"
Morocco, Circa 1950
This stunning antique Moroccan carpet was woven by the Beni Ouran nomads of High Atlas Mountains. This origin certainly accounts for the lush shaggy pile and spontaneous, almost primitive quality of its network design in gray and black on a natural, undyed ivory field. But this piece is strikingly modern in its fluid, abstract expressiveness, recalling as it does the painting of Klee or Miro. The nomadic heritage of the piece emerges as well in the long, braided finish of the fringe, which is rarely preserved once pieces of this type enter the rug market.
